瀟湘八景（しょうしょう はっけい）とは中国山水画の伝統的なテーマで、
洞庭湖とそれに流入する瀟水と湘江の
合流するあたりを八つの画題で描いたものです。
北宋時代に宋迪が風光明媚なこの地方を山水図として描いたことが始まりと言われており、
後にこの画題が流行し日本にも及びました。
国内では雪舟や狩野派の画家たち、あるいは横山大観による作品が有名です。
日本各地に○○八景と呼ばれる場所があるのは瀟湘八景が起源です。

This work is offered as a single set of eight pieces.
The "Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang" is a traditional theme in Chinese landscape painting.
It depicts the area around Lake Dongting and the confluence of the Xiao River and the Xiang River, expressed through eight poetic subjects.
The origin of this theme is said to date back to the Northern Song dynasty, when Song Di portrayed the scenic beauty of this region in landscape paintings.
The motif later gained wide popularity and was transmitted to Japan, where it inspired numerous interpretations.
In Japan, works on this theme by artists such as Sesshū, painters of the Kanō school, and Yokoyama Taikan are particularly well known.
The many places throughout Japan referred to as “○○ Eight Views” trace their origin to the Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang.
